Miss Marilyn

Background & Early Years:
Marilyn Terry’s journey in the performing arts began at the tender age of 6. With over 20 years of experience, she has become a multifaceted artist in dance and theater. Her early years were marked by significant involvement in dance productions and school musicals across the San Fernando Valley, laying the foundation for a diverse and dynamic career.

Career Highlights:

  • 2003: Marilyn’s career gained momentum when she became a backup salsa/hip hop dancer for Flakiss, marking her first major professional engagement.
  • 2003-2006: She expanded her repertoire, appearing in an impactful ad campaign alongside Chuck Woolery, focusing on the plight of incarcerated children.
  • 2006-2021: As an instructor in Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Glee, and Musical Theater for a non-profit organization, Marilyn dedicated 15 years to nurturing young talent. She also contributed to various performing arts companies, teaching students aged 2-18.

Educational Path & Teaching:

Marilyn honed her skills at The Performing Arts Center and Los Angeles Pierce College, studying under Mariam Weisser. At California State University of Northridge (CSUN), she earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a focus on Physical Education. During her time at CSUN, she was instrumental in a Housing and Urban Development grant project, enhancing physical education for local elementary students.

Dance Companies & Cultural Exposure:

  • MKM Cultural Art Center: As a Shirley Martin Dancer, Marilyn showcased a unique blend of modern, jazz, and African dance styles.
  • Aloha Hula Studio: She delved into Polynesian culture, performing Tahitian and hula dances across Southern California.

Songwriting & Conferences:

  • Amy & Marilyn: Marilyn embarked on a songwriting journey with Amy Semelsberger, releasing “Ballet Dancing in the AM” in 2016. here
  • Shape America Convention: She shared her expertise as a speaker, educating physical educators nationwide on integrating dance into physical education.

Current Ventures:
Marilyn recently founded “Productions With Miss Marilyn,” continuing her passion for teaching dance in elementary schools. Her current focus includes folk dancing and exploring new genres like Folklorico with Grupo Folklorico de West Los Angeles.

Philosophy & Impact:
Marilyn is deeply grateful for the opportunities to perform and teach, believing in the power of performing arts to build confidence, captivate audiences, and tell compelling stories. Her journey is a testament to her dedication to the arts and her ability to inspire and educate the next generation of performers.
