Miss Marilyn

Background and Early Years

Marilyn Terry’s passion for the performing arts began at just six years old. With over two decades of experience in dance and theater, she has built a multifaceted career as a performer, choreographer, and educator. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Marilyn performed in numerous dance productions and school musicals, establishing the foundation for her dynamic career in the arts.

Career Highlights

  • 2003 – Launched her professional career as a backup salsa and hip-hop dancer for Flakiss.
  • 2003–2006 – Appeared in a high-profile ad campaign with Chuck Woolery, raising awareness for children impacted by incarceration.
  • 2006–2021 – Served as an instructor in jazz, hip hop, ballet, glee, and musical theater for a non-profit organization, mentoring students ages 2–18.
  • Worked with multiple performing arts companies, teaching and inspiring the next generation of dancers and actors.

Education and Teaching

Marilyn studied at The Performing Arts Center and Los Angeles Pierce College under Mariam Weisser. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Physical Education from California State University, Northridge (CSUN).

At CSUN, she played a key role in a Housing and Urban Development grant project that enhanced physical education programs for local elementary schools.

Dance Companies and Cultural Experience

  • MKM Cultural Art Center – Performed as a Shirley Martin Dancer, blending modern, jazz, and African dance styles.
  • Aloha Hula Studio – Immersed herself in Polynesian traditions, performing Tahitian and hula dance across Southern California.

Songwriting and Speaking Engagements

  • Amy & Marilyn – Co-wrote and released “Ballet Dancing in the AM” in 2016 with Amy Semelsberger. For More Info, View Here
  • Shape America Convention – Presented to physical educators nationwide on incorporating dance into physical education.

Current Work: Productions with Miss Marilyn

Marilyn is the founder of Productions with Miss Marilyn, a program dedicated to teaching dance in elementary schools. She focuses on folk dance and is expanding into new genres, including Folklorico with Grupo Folklorico de West Los Angeles.

Philosophy and Impact

Marilyn believes in the transformative power of the performing arts to build confidence, captivate audiences, and tell meaningful stories. Her dedication to both performing and teaching continues to inspire young artists and strengthen communities through the arts.
